WRASCAL

Senior Animation Capstone, 2022

Animated Intro Sequence, worldbuilding, and pre production process. The product of an independent, year-long project.

Maman's Manor

The Story

WRASCAL is an animated series about a low level demon who is banished to the earth realm for being too mischievous and not evil enough. The titular character, Wrascal, is mistaken for a regular house cat and he finds himself taken in (by force!) by a kind old lady and her terribly annoying family. With no intent to change his ways, Wrascal will continue to cause problems on purpose for every human he encounters, though he would like to get home eventually.

Moodboard and Influence

Wrascal is influenced by "cursed" pictures of black cats.

Sketches

The earliest sketch of Wrascal (by name) dates back to 2018, in which he was a doodle to fill my sketchbook in 2D foundations. Though, I had previously drawn Wrascal-esque characters in the margins of my high school notebooks as well.

Final Design

Wrascal is a cat-like demon with the ability to contort his features and morph his body into many different forms, as long as it stays within the same relative size.

Supporting Characters

The Kids

Jasper and Alicia are the children of Sir and Ma'am. They are influenced by old dolls and the "creepy child" trope seen in many pieces of media. In the Intro they are in silhouette for aesthetic cohesiveness, in the show they would be as seen top right.

The Adults

The idea behind Sir, Ma'am, and Maman being faceless, silhouettes comes from the iconography of Victorian silhouette portraits. It is also meant to create a visual distance between childhood and adulthood and further drive a wedge between the characters.

Environment

The original inspirations for Wrascal’s town were Halloween and gothic Victorian architecture/lifestyle. This quickly evolved to include a more modern attributes in addition to the historical aspects, and less obvious Halloween elements. The gothic influence is still prominent. I want the time and setting to be overall unclear and contain an amalgamation of traits from many eras; there are to be elements of modern day as well as multiple historical eras.

Characterization

The Future of WRASCAL

Now that my university studies are over, I would love to continue this project. I have a finished outline and a first draft script in progress. My ultimate goal is a fully finished pilot.
